Mets DFA Knight: After his start Saturday the New York Mets designed pitcher Brandon Knight for assignment. What that means is he is coming off their 40-man roster, another team can claim him or he will accept a spot in Triple-A. The move was most likely done so he could join the Olympic USA baseball team.

In Saturday’s start, Knight went 5 innings and gave up 7 hits and 4 earned runs. He also struck out four and threw 64 of his 99 pitches for strikes. His catcher was former Somerset Patriots backstop Robinson Cancel.

Did the Mets designate Brandon Knight for assignment so he can go and play for the Olympic team?

That appears to be what will happen. I would be a little surprised if the Mets don’t use him in September or even offer him another deal for 2009.

Knight cannot play for the Olympic team, the rosters had to be finalized on Tuesday hence the Rangers sending Teagarden back down. Unless the Mets release him entirely he is ineligible to my knowledge.
