Patriots Spring Training Underway: The first workouts were underway yesterday, as 28 of the 29 players expected to compete for jobs on this year’s Somerset Patriots team were there.
Brian Reith was a no-show, but team officials expect he’ll be there by the end of the week.

Unannounced additions to the roster were P Travis Minix and INF Matt Hagen. 3B Brandon Larson also officially joined the team, but his deal had been done for a while.

As for any actual news…well, don’t expect any. With 29 guys, the team has at least four cuts to make, but I wouldn’t expect to see anything like that until the last day of camp.

All they really did yesterday was take some BP, the pitchers did their PFP, and that’s about it.

“I felt good, it was nice to get back out there,” said Somerset’s Michael Ryan. “It was good to get to know the guys, and meet Sparky and take some swings.”

There was also a team dinner as well at a local country club that I was invited to by Steve Kalafer, but I unfortunately could not attend due to a prior commitment.

Here’s a few photos from yesterday afternoon.

But Mike, I want video, you say… Well, how about this unique look at Brandon Knight from behind the cage?

I will be in Somerset today and Thursday, then in Newark on Friday and Saturday.

Ducks Add Ulloa: The Long Island Ducks have added P Manny Ulloa. That gives them around 20 players. It seems pretty obvious, to me anyway, that they have a few names that they’re sitting on. Quite often, some decent name players will sign right after spring training ends, especially if they were late cuts in affiliated camp so that they don’t have to participate in — and let’s be honest here — some relatively meaningless activities.

I know at least one team is sitting one big name returning player, and one player who might just be the biggest new name you’ve seen all off-season, but that’s more due to visa issues than it is anything else, and that may also be playing a role in the somewhat short rosters a few other teams may have.

Perkins Added To Camden: The Riversharks have added P Vince Perkins. A 26-year-old righty, Perkins led the New York-Penn League in K’s per 9 in 2001, and has had decent strikeout numbers in the past. He’s advanced as high as Double-A with both the Brewers and Blue Jays. – Mike Ashmore

Is there an intra-squad game tomorrow (Thurs)?

2. Mike - April 16, 2008

Was good to meet you today, good to see the fans are coming out and supporting the team.

Report time is 10 AM tomorrow, and an intra-squad game is scheduled for 10:30

I fully intend on asking Brandon Larson about being sawed off again, too haha…

Hope that helps.

Hey Mike, sorry for an early request but could you get a shot of Vito in his new Pats digs?
