Bears Update: I caught up with Newark Bears Assistant GM Jim Cerny the other day, and he provided me with an update regarding the Bears plans for the 2008 season.

Not wanting to replicate what Lancaster did last season (my words, not his) Cerny said that the team is likely to bring back only a small part of last year’s team, with a handful of “core” players set to return.

One of his biggest tasks of the off-season was replacing the right side of the infield, with Javier Colina signing with the White Sox and Victor Rodriguez set to start the season in Mexico.

The Bears have accomplished that, with the team inking two Major Leaguers to contracts…deals that are set to be announced shortly.

Cerny seemed excited about this year’s version of the Bears, and I’m certainly looking forward to seeing what he’s got up his sleeve in the coming weeks. – MA
