South Division Comes Down To This: After the Bears swept the Ducks to advance to the finals for the first time since they won it all in 2002, the Patriots and Riversharks are going to a third game.

Lincoln Mikkelsen and Greg Powell are the probable starters tonight, and the game starts at 7PM in Camden.

Games One and Two of the Championship Series will take place in either Camden or Somerset. Game Three and a fourth and fifth game (if necessary) will be in Newark.

I plan on covering all the games in Newark, if possible.

So, what do you think? Who will the Bears be facing tomorrow night? – Mike Ashmore

1. Jason - September 20, 2007

Fascinating matchup because of the Mikkelsen subplot. It will be interesting to see if McGarvey plays. He was out in Game 2 with back spasms.

2. mnlem - September 20, 2007

This is the game the Patriots signed Mikkelsen for. Hopefully, he is like last year as opposed to the hittable fellow seen recently. Last two games were very tight, tense affairs, I am hoping for a Patriot blowout.

3. Z - September 20, 2007

I’m hoping for Bears and Somerset, but I’m sure the Bears front office and managing staff want Camden…As a Bears fan we have a score to settle with Somerset from the 2001 season when we lost the finals in 5 games….and lost at the Den…

4. TheBaseballGal - September 20, 2007

I wrote in yesterdays blog that McGarvey was suffering from a sore back the last few days, and should be expected to return for tonights game…that will be huge for Camden if he does and is healthy.

I hope for Bears/Camden, but its gonna be another close game tonight, i guarantee

5. Z - September 20, 2007

Bears-Camden would be good since the Bears coaching staff coached at Camden last year…

6. Roadwarriorfan - September 20, 2007

Some interesting things out of the Can-Am League…the North Shore Spirit are stopping operations, according to a memo to fans on their official website. The Spirit were 3rd in the league in attendance at 2,299 a game and lost in the championship series to Nashua. The Can-Am League had 10 teams this season, including The Grays, a Road Warrior-type team. I bring this up because I wonder if anyone will leave the Atlantic League now, and I saw someone talk about the Bears yesterday. Wonder what everyone will do?

7. Jason - September 20, 2007

Last year at this time there were strong rumors about AC leaving. I haven’t heard anything like that about Bridgeport or Newark.

The Pride might also fold. That situation is still up in the air.

8. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - September 20, 2007

Let me answer a few things from yesterday…

Somerset is expected to move into the North Division, so yeah…it would be an all BASA division.

Some things had better change if that’s going to be the case.

Secondly, both AC and Nashua are on extremely rough ground right now…specifically, I’ve been hearing a lot of things about AC having some issues.

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY doubt you see — and have not heard anything about — the Bears leaving the league next season, same goes for Bridgeport.

Honestly, I don’t even think it’s a good time to be talking about that. The Bears are in the finals, and this is a great time to be associated with their organization, so nobody’s going to want to read talk about that.

9. www.BrickCityBruins.com - September 20, 2007

Considering the Riversharks have bitten the Bears’ tails this season, I do NOT want to have to face them again. Too many former Sharks on the Bears’ roster, can’t beat their old team. Let Somerset take care of the Sharks. Let’s go PATS!!!

10. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 20, 2007

I don’t think too many Bears fans want to see the SHARKS. It is time to set back with Patriots.. Remember Bears Fans 2001???? YES, Go PATS…..

PATS & BEARS a repeat of 2001

11. Z - September 20, 2007

I guess I agree..One of the few times I’ll root for the Pats…..:)

12. www.BrickCityBruins.com - September 20, 2007

Interesting read for those of you hearing rumors of the Bears’ demise:

13. TheBaseballGal - September 20, 2007

Any way it goes, i think it will be a great championship series…it could go anyway…

if camden loses to Somerset tonight, i will root for the Bears. They are just a well rounded machine.

14. Jason - September 20, 2007

If I was a Bears fan, I’d probably be rooting for Camden. The Patriots were 12 games better than the Sharks in the second half for a reason. Somerset is the better team right now.

Elimination games are always great, though, so it should be fun to watch.

15. hwcwx1 - September 20, 2007

Great job by the Newark Bears, If Wayne is not the manager of the year no one should be, from worse to first in a year, that’s a great job !! I like to see Somerset win tonight with the Bears taking it in 4. I think the sharks could be a real pain if we get them. Good luck Bears and to the very hard working Bears front office staff !!

16. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - September 20, 2007

The league is expected to announce end of season awards tomorrow…

17. Roadwarriorfan - September 20, 2007

Haha, sorry to start that. I just miss the Road Warriors already! lol. As for the playoffs, I’m rooting for Somerset!

18. mnlem - September 20, 2007

Patriots up 2-0 after top of first. Hopefully Mikkelsen has his A game.

19. mnlem - September 20, 2007

Mikkelsen looks sharp, at least on the radio.

One of the reasons I don’t want the patriots season to end is the enjoyable Brian Bender broadcasts. He does a really first class job (though Mike was sharp too when he filled in!).

20. TheBaseballGal - September 20, 2007

thanks for the updates mnlem…my internet radio is not working tonight 😦

21. Jason - September 20, 2007

It’s Somerset 4-0 in the fourth. Morban with a two-run homer.

22. TheBaseballGal - September 20, 2007

they are really rockin Powell…let me know when Fergie takes him out…thanks seriously for the updates guys…this internet is killing me 😦

I’ll go back to writing a new blog til another update 🙂

23. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 20, 2007

5-0 Patriots Homerun Presley.

24. Jason - September 21, 2007

Powell out. Ion in. That was a pretty slow hook for an elimination game. Ferrari was warming up in the first, but obviously never got the call.

25. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

they gotta put Ferrari in! 🙂

26. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 21, 2007

8-0 Patriots

27. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 21, 2007

Guess we are going to have the RIVALS in the championship. BEARS & PATS

28. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

wow this is tragic…im kind of glad my radio ISNT working 😦

29. Alpbphoto - September 21, 2007

Yes, former Newark Bears announcer Brian Bender is doing a great job as usual. If you are a Bears fan you do not want to play Camden as the Bears have not found a way to beat Camden all season.

Bears leaving the Atlantic League? They have already announced the Bears are the host of the 2009 Allstar game. Would that happen to a team that is leaving. Granted that could change should the Bears leave but why would they.

The lines at the box office for playoff tickets have been awesome. The crowds have been getting bigger thanks to the quality of Baseball being played in Newark this year. And as far as yesterday’s comments about the event between QJ and Ruppert, I think the Bears front office were upset because it was just a couple of years ago when Ruppert fell off the dugout and the person inside broke their back. Pouring water is less of a shock to someone in a costume that can’t even feel it than the surprise of getting hit with something, Something that could shock you to step back off of the dugout.

30. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Well,so much for Brad Strauss winning a champioship in his last season.

31. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 21, 2007

9-0 Patriots wow. what a blow to Camden so far.

32. www.BrickCityBruins.com - September 21, 2007

The Patriots have pulled the teeth out of these Sharks. Reel ’em in, Pats!

33. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

yikes, this game is sounding absolutely awful…

let me know when/if they put ferrari in… 🙂

Seriously thanks for the constant updates…even if its not going the way i would like…

34. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

I totally agree with you mnlem,Brian Bender is very good. The AL is blessed to have some really good announcers. Bender,Chris King,Dave Collins,Jim Cerney and Darrel Henry are all first rate. I haven’t heard the Bridgeport or Camden announcers. The only awful announcer is the Ducks own David Weiss.

35. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

i am not a big fan of the camden announcers, but they dont radio every single game.

Darrell Henry is awesome..i love listening to him, he is informative, funny, and does great interviews. I really enjoyed working with him this season.

36. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 21, 2007

9-2 Pats

37. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Come on,Chomp em Sharks.

38. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 21, 2007

11-2 Olivares homerun

39. www.BrickCityBruins.com - September 21, 2007

Ouch! The fish are drowning!

40. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

radio finally working….this is rough to listen to…im glad i didnt make the trip tonight….eek

41. www.BrickCityBruins.com - September 21, 2007

Camden needs a mercy rule! They’re getting thrashed!

42. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Go Pats. It is an odd year.

43. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

thats what i said in another post haha

44. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Sorry baseball girl,I wasn’t trying to steal,my bad.

45. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

no no, i was just saying, we are on the same page, hehe 🙂

46. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

It is pretty unusual for this odd number year thing.

47. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

it is very weird…kinda cool though…especially if they do it again this year…

Yay Ferrari is in :)…c’mon sharks….comeback? 🙂

48. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Ferrari has that funky leg kick on his delivery doesnt he.

49. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

he has a very strange delivery…he can bend his left arm in all sorts of ways…its kinda cool to watch 🙂

50. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Well, the Sharks are clearing their bench. I guess we can call this garbage time.

51. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - September 21, 2007

I think you can ask a few questions as to why this series went the way it ultimately did for Camden.

Perhaps the most pressing one is about the pitcher you all seem to be talking about tonight — Anthony Ferrari.

Inexplicable that your best pitcher all season is relegated to mop-up duty in a third game.

But, it’s just as hard to believe that Somerset came back. I walked out of that stadium on Tuesday confident that I wouldn’t be back until 2008.

Instead, I’ll be there tomorrow…

Bears and Patriots. I have no rooting interest, but this worked out well for me, since I can cover all five potential games of the series since it’s close.

52. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 21, 2007

13-3 PATS

53. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

How is Sparky Lyle when it comes to interviewing him?He alway’s seems kind of bored and above the league. I hope I’m wrong.

54. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

Good season for all teams involved.

I will never understand why Fergie decided to put Anthony in the pen for the last part of the season and the playoffs. Ferrari was cool with it, because he has been a closer his entire life, and only really became a starter this season when he came to play for Camden. I know he has never been one this season to go more than 5-6 innings, but with the rotation they chose for the playoffs, i think it may have been wise to start him this third game.

I’m now waiting to see if Pats retaliate after LeClair hit Larson with that pitch…

55. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - September 21, 2007

To answer the Sparky question, he’s really rhe exact opposite.

He’s very honest and unfiltered, he never gives you BS, as some other managers in the league have and still do.

You may not agree with what he says or the way he says it sometimes, but it’s always what’s actually on his mind.

56. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - September 21, 2007

*the exact opposite…

57. Jason - September 21, 2007

I can understand starting Powell. He’s a veteran and he had a decent season. I can’t understand not yanking Powell for Ferrari at the first sign of trouble. Waiting until it is 5-0 is too late.

58. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Good,I’m glad to hear that about Sparky.

59. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 21, 2007

PATRIOTS 13-3. It is going to be Bears against Pats. LET’S go Bears all the way.

60. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

wow…this camden game has been pretty heated the last inning…people getting tossed, HBP,…i figured it would happen, these two teams are not fond of each other…

Bears-Pats is gonna be a very sweet series

61. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - September 21, 2007

I probably would have switched the roles that Powell and Ferrari filled — starting Ferrari and having Powell come out of the pen if needed…but I guess it’s way too late for that scenario now.

62. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - September 21, 2007

And also, great job by you guys tonight…probably the most comments we’ve ever had.

I look forward to all of you checking back over the next 3-5 days.

63. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Sounds like The Sharks have given up the ship,I heard Abreu didn’t hustle after a ball.

64. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

uh oh…wow…this is sounding crazy… abreu “lollygagging”…Fergie took Abreu out…

yeah, this has been fun commenting during this game…i am enjoying hearing what others have to say!

65. BEARSLOYALFAN - September 21, 2007

The ship went deep in the river. Now is all Bears and Patriots.

66. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Yea,it’s pretty cool to talk with fan’s around the league.

67. TheBaseballGal - September 21, 2007

wow…Umpire Joe Cruz is really having to get involved…lots of anger in the Riversharks dugout…its sad to hear about this. I know they are getting pounded, but this is just poor sportsmanship amongst teammates, and teams…

Lyle was ejected earlier.

I wish i would have read these blogs earlier in the season. Im gonna try to blog about my experiences in the league, but i just started my blog the other day. I really like reading what Scott and Mike have to say on here! You guys are awesome

68. chuckerd58 - September 21, 2007

Welcome baseballgirl, looking forward to your experiences.

69. www.BrickCityBruins.com - September 21, 2007

Bye Bye B.A.S.A. You’re done for this year.

70. sharkgirltoo - September 21, 2007

I was at the game last night and of course majorly disappointed with the outcome (mnlem, you got your wish for a blowout!), especially after the first 2 games being so close. The Sharks best chance was on Wed. (game 2) but couldn’t get the job done. The Patriots’ bats woke up and blasted the Sharks’ pitching. I thought Powell should start but ended up getting roughed up as well as the other Shark pitchers. It was hard and sad to see it end this way and knew it would be difficult for the Sharks to come back from such a huge deficit but was hoping they’d come back (“it ain’t over til it’s over”). I was surprised that the crowd on hand was only about half of amount of people that showed up on Wed. night being that it was coming down to this game.
Thanks BaseballGal for getting back to me re :McGarvey. Glad to see him play. He was just about our only offense last night with a 2 run homer. They replaced Brad Strauss for a pinch runner in the 8th or 9th inning so Brad at least got acknowledged by the (remaining)fans as he walked off the field.
Congrats to the Patriots. Should be a good series with the Bears.
