Bears Blow-Up Transaction Wire: Not exactly, but three moves is a pretty busy day in the Atlantic League.

Today the Bears lost pitcher Gary Knotts, who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. Knotts was 7-5 with a 2.65 ERA this season. The former major leaguer has 86 games of big league experience and struck out 162 during that time.

The Bears also signed another former big leaguer in outfielder Ruben Mateo. Mateo played for the Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals in the bigs. He began the 2007 season in Huntsville of the double-A Southern League, playing in 24 games scoring 14 runs and driving in 15.

In a related move, to make room for Mateo, Newark released outfielder Joe Jiannetti. He was batting .227 in 57 games. – Scott Stanchak

Pressley On DL: Somerset INF Josh Pressley has been placed on the DL with an oblique injury. Also, 2B Danny Garcia is expected to return at some point during the Newark series.

Mike Kinkade is here and is active as well.

Relax, Kelington Made Fans: I know many of you have spent many sleepless nights wondering about the whereabouts of former Bridgeport C Kelington Made. But never fear, as he’s landed on his feet in the Golden Baseball League. Made, who hit .300 in 7 games for the Bluefish, has signed with the St. George Roadrunners. – Mike Ashmore

As the Bears pitching staff gets thinner and thinner….

yahbut….remember something: Affiliated regular season ends on Labor Day. These guys can come back on September 4th if they are needed to play in the post season for Newark. Newark can coast right through the 2nd half, at this point, they are in!

Which is a luxury that I wish the Bluefish had, and they SHOULD have had. They are really struggling with errors and unearned runs right now. If you look at games we’ve lost since a week before the All-Star break, how many would we have won if you factored out unearned runs? I haven’t done the research, but I read the box scores every day, and my hunch is we lost more games on unearned runs than on earned runs.

Yes, our pitching has been inconsistent lately…but the guys are working on that, the pitchers themselves have told me so. It’s the unearned runs caused by sloppy errors that is killing us right now. If they Bluefish can get the errors under control, I think they have the pitching and the hitting to get the job done in what’s left of the second half.

I remember watching Reuben Mateo and many other up and coming Texas Rangers playing in the Florida State League while visiting my Mom in Port Charlotte. Butch Wynager was the mgr. and Jesse Barfield was a coach.

I really don’t think that all those Bears pitchers will be back come September….I’m hoping but I don’t think it will happen..

I’ll say Mike Kinkade is here. He went 4 for 4 last night against Bridgeport.
