Patriots Sign Goelz; Cut Santana: Somerset has signed OF Bryan Goelz and released C Manny Santana.

Goelz split last season with the Ducks and Road Warriors, and becomes Somerset’s sixth outfielder. He provides some depth, but I think it’s kind of a curious signing considering the…ummm, existing depth.

Road Warriors News: I spoke to P Chris Eickhorst before the game, and he said that he was unsure if he was being moved into the starting rotation. He said that pitching five innings yesterday was more the result of guys being banged up than it was anything else.

Also, Charlie Hesseltine has joined the Road Warriors and started for them tonight.

I also spoke to Jeff Scott before the game and — and this was also confirmed by Joe Klein — that Road Warriors players will be subject to the “claims process” that occurs every other Friday in two days. Scott said that a catcher (guess who?), an infielder and a starting pitcher have all been inquired about fairly recently.

The Road Warriors can only lose one player at a time to this process, and the process is based on reverser order of win-loss record, although I was told by Scott that each team can only claim one player, so York’s claim of Manny Ulloa may make them exempt from claiming future players.

Two Announcements: Check this site tomorrow for two exclusive announcements regarding player signings.

Former Somerset pitcher Scott Aldred supervises Phil Hughes in his second rehab start for the Double-A Trenton Thunder

News Updates: I’m in Trenton to cover Phil Hughes second rehab start, but I’ll be in Somerset and will have things updated at some point later this afternoon. Talk amongst yourselves for the time being. – MA

Jeff Nettles watch. After 53 at bats (14 games) in AA he is:

.264 3 hrs 12 rbi

Not a bad debut. Very weird though, he has yet to walk.

I think he will taste AAA this year.

He must have had a good last couple of games, I know he slumped a little bit after a strong start over there…

RIch Elliot reported in today’s CT Post that Steve Hine may be returning to the Bluefish. He may be joining the team FRiday in Newark.

Ducks win, Bluefish lose. Ducks are 6 – 0 to start the second half. Yankees win, Boston and Cleveland lose. Yankees are 7 games back in the East (6 in the loss column) and 6 games back in the wildcard race and the Mets are losing 4-0 to San Diego in the 6th. What a great night!!!
