Games Taken Very Seriously: Hmmm, let’s check out yesterday’s box scores. Bridgeport’s Matt Beech played first base, Brandon Knight played right field in both games of a doubleheader for Somerset, and Camden’s Mark Ion played first base two days ago.

Somerset’s problems were caused by injuries, so I suppose they get a free pass. Not sure what was up with the other teams, but if you’re going to make teams make up games at the end of the year, there should at least be some sort of attempt made at legitimacy.

I don’t subscribe to the game that games like these don’t matter, they do. If a wild-card scenario presents itself in the playoffs, and you miss the postseason by a game, how do those games not matter?

Another question that can be raised is in regards to a team that is forced to do this due to injuries. In the list of ways to obtain a Road Warrior, as told me to be over the phone by Frank Boulton, I don’t recall there being any sort of emergency injury policy.

If you’re going to have a team like the Road Warriors, a developmental team that serves the other seven teams in the league, perhaps there should be some sort of contingency plan that a team can acquire a player from the team on an emergency basis so that situations like this are avoided. I’d like to think that league officials wouldn’t be happy to see pitchers playing the field, so maybe some sort of 72-hour “Rent A Road Warrior” plan could be implemented until the team can go out and make the necessary roster moves.

Of Freaking Course: According to The Macon Telegraph, P Bryce Florie turned down the offer from the Newark Bears.

The Music…OK, no…I refuse to call a professional sports team that…Macon (that’s better) team officials did not return a call for comment.

How Chris Wakeland Almost Died: Former Somerset Patriots and Camden Riversharks OF Chris Wakeland is the subject of this article in The Long Beach Press-Telegram, detailing how an intestinal problem nearly killed the former Detroit Tigers outfielder last year.

Home Run Derby Rosters Set: Jim Seip reports that the rosters for the Atlantic League All-Star Home Run Derby are set. Here they are…

NORTH

Javier Colina (NWK)
Vito Chiaravolloti (RW)
Ray Navarrete (LI)

SOUTH

Jeremy Todd (LAN)
L.J. Biernbaum (CAM)
Mike Lockwood (SOM)

Ryan Dunleavy noted in his game story that Lockwood will be replaced by teammate Josh Pressley.

Seip also writes that Bluefish INF Junior Spivey is expected to play in the game.

I will not be attending the midsummer classic, but I will put my money on Biernbaum to win the Derby. As for the game itself, I’ll bet on “who cares” to win, with the South to place and the North to show. – Mike Ashmore

Patriots may rue getting swept yesterday if Camden wins the scond half. I listened to a bit of the game and it certainly seemed like the Barnstormers were taking it very seriously.

Inteesrtingly, the box score neither makes the League or Pats website this morning.

Heard LJ Biernbaum got picked up-great for him & well-deserved but we’re sure gonna miss him! (I believe it was the K.C. Royals.)

I know I am not a marketing genius, but does it make sense for the league to take it’s Allstar Break at the same time as MLB? a full slate of games last night, day off today and back to business tomorrow has to give them some advantage. I realize that “Transformers” is a bigger competitor than the Mets, Phils or Yanks, but still with no MLB on TV to watch its got to help the gate some.

Glad to learn Spivey will play tomorrow, if for no other reason than it’s got to mean that whatever caused him to take a few days off has been resolved, hopefully with a positive result.

First off, I think it says a lot about Spivey that he’d come play in the ASG considering everything that’s been going on in his life.

Obviously, our interview didn’t go that well, but he approached me the day after and said he wasn’t comfortable talking about himself and would have rather talked about the team, which I can respect.

Secondly, I checked on the Biernbaum post, and I have not been able to confirm that he was picked up…
