Today’s Headlines: Live in Somerset…Brownlie’s Line…What I’m Working On

A riveting look from Commerce Bank Ballpark at 8:15 AM.

Live In Somerset: The live updates from Newark went over pretty well, so I’m here in Somerset at around 8:15 in the morning looking to do the same thing. I’ll have all sorts of good stuff throughout the day. Much to my chagrin, I haven’t seen anyone get arrested today, so that’s kind of a bummer.

9:45 AM — Not much going om, outside of me sweating my butt off. Went down and talked to Jeff Scott real quick…he said Carlos Castillo’s lost somewhere in the vicinity of 50 pounds, so I’ll be curious to see if he’s even recognizable on the mound today. A few players, such as Josh Pressley, are taking extra cuts in the cage.

10:05 AM — Just came up from talking to Brett Jodie. Doesn’t sound like any roster moves are imminent, but he did say he was looking for an outfielder. Several players he was in contact with signed in affiliated ball, and he doesn’t think he’s allowed to grab anyone from the Road Warriors either. With that said, he may not need an outfielder. Jodie told me that everything is contingent on Jose Morban and when he’s able to return. If he comes back in a week, don’t expect any moves to be made.

Lineups —

Road Warriors

Harris, LF
Suarez, SS
Aracena, C
Chiaravolloti, DH
Bladergroen, 1B
Doetsch, RF
Fenwick, 2B
Housel, 3B
Hutchins, CF
C. Castillo, P

Garcia, 2B
Olivares, SS
Lockwood, CF
Nettles, 3B
Pressley, DH
Zinter, LF
Anderson, C
Leathers, 1B
Ayala, RF
Cannon, P

11:30 AM — Bladergroen homer gives the RW a 1-0 lead, top 2. Here’s some fun with photos…

Road Warriors starter Carlos Castillo

Road Warriors catcher Sandy Aracena

Pats starter Jon Cannon

12:10 PM — Benches have emptied. Carlos Castillo drilled Danny Garcia. Garcia was upset, and stared Castillo down. Castillo started walking towards Garcia, and the benches emptied. 2-0 Road Warriors in the third…doubting this is over.

12:35 PM — Alan Zinter smoked one to right field for a three-run bomb, Pats up 4-2, top 5.

12:45 PM — Tied at four after four and a half. Back-to-back dingers for Sandy Aracena and Vito Chiaravolloti.

1:35 PM — 10-9 Patriots in the top of the seventh. There’s been somewhere in the vicinity of 46 home runs today. Aracena has two. I’ll have more later.

Ron Fenwick, pitcher

2:25 PM — Just saw Ron Fenwick pitch. Cool. 14-9 Pats win. 17 hits for Somerset and 15 for RW.

Brownlie’s Line: Although it’s a little later than I was hoping for, here’s Newark starter Bobby Brownlie’s line from last night’s loss in Long Island.

7.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 2 HR. His ERA jumped to 3.09, and his record fell to 3-2. He’s still the likely starter in Somerset on Monday, but that could change…

What I’m Working On: The off-season player Q&A’s went pretty well, so I’m trying to line something up with a media-friendly pitcher in regards to having a little segment where fans can submit questions and interact with him. I’ll let you know when I know more… – Mike Ashmore

Any chance on getting some comments from Alan Zinter, to see what his feelings are about the Atlantic League, and his approach to getting back with an affiliated club?

2. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - May 31, 2007

That was actually the plan today, but SNY was here to talk to him, soooooo…

But I will. The guy is in RIDICULOUS shape, by the way.

3. Jeff - May 31, 2007

Looking forward to that post later today. It will be interesting to hear his thoughts on getting back with the help of the AL. Thanks Mike!

Wouldn’t expect that until tomorrow, but I will do it…

Castillo? 50 pounds lost? I’m looking at your photo, and I’m noticing the “extra player” hanging over his belt. 50 pounds? Hhhmmmm. 50 ounces maybe.

Keep posting those photos, Mike. Keep ’em coming!

Sounds like a fun morning at the park. Can’t beat that. Great action photo’s,and yea,Castillo must have really been huge if he lost 50 lbs. I shouldn’t talk. So,the Pat’s finally cooled off the red hot Warriors. Any retaliation from the Pats about the hbp?

I saw Zinter in Newark Tuesday night. Nice guy and does not look his 38-39 years of age. Should be a good interview. I saw him referred to as “the real-life Crash Davis and is the owner of over 260 career MiLB HRs. I remember when the Muts traded him to the Tigers for Rico Brogna.

You probably have this already but Ramon Nivar is now playing for the Revolution. He started at second and went to RF when Danny Bautista was tossed out of the game. Bryon Batson is also with the team and I believe pitched the eighth, (#22, no announcement was made.) Also Matt Dryer was replaced in the first inning which is a tough break for York if he’s out.
