Storming Off: Jason Guarente is reporting in his blog that one of the Lancaster starters won’t be coming to Spring Training and that another pitcher may be brought in shortly. I know who I hope it isn’t, but make sure you keep checking back there for the latest.

Bear Tracks: The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced they have signed 2004 Atlantic League Most Valuable Player Victor Rodriguez and Joe Jiannetti, and agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hill for the 2007 season. More on this later.

Breakdown By Position

Italics denotes that a player is being listed in his secondary position

Bridgeport

INF: Angel Espada, Luis Figueroa (3B/SS), Jesse Hoorelbeke (1B), Milko Jaramillo (SS)
OF: Shaun Boyd, Bobby Darula, Angel Espada, John Nathans, Jeremy Ware
C: John Nathans
SP: Matt Beech, Brian Boehringer, Albie Lopez, Jordan Pals, Mike Porzio
RP: Garrett Berger, Evan Fahrner, Sean Fesh, Steven Kent, Franklin Perez, Justin Sturge

(Ashmore’s Updated Notes: Bridgeport still has a few needs. York has four catchers, and they only have John Nathans, who isn’t your everyday guy back there. I wonder what Todd Pratt’s up to these days…)

Camden

INF: Cristian Berroa (SS), Matt DeMarco (3B/SS), Ramon Nivar (2B), Craig Paquette (3B), Brad Strauss (3B/DH)
OF: Denny Abreu, L.J. Biernbaum, Dwight Maness, Ramon Nivar, Craig Paquette, Justin Singleton, Jamal Strong
C: Randy McGarvey, Angel Pena
SP: Ryan Costello, Brendon Davis, Greg Powell
RP: Caleb Balbuena, Chad Bentz, Brendon Davis, Bryan Edwards, Chris Fussell, Mark Ion, Ramon Linares, Kevin Walker, Kelly Wunsch

(Ashmore’s Updated Notes: I’m going to assume that one or two of the guys I have listed as relievers are going to start. If not, they need some starting pitching for sure. They also need a true first baseman — perhaps Paquette will play there.)

Lancaster

INF: Rene Aqueron (3B), Dario Delgado (1B/3B), Danny Gonzalez (SS), Bo Hart (2B), Jeremy Todd (1B), Steve Van Note (3B), Mike Woods (2B)
OF: Quincy Foster, Jutt Hileman, Jeremy Todd, Chris Van Rossum, Clyde Williams, Mike Woods
C: Lance Burkhart, Jeremy Dietrick, Manny Santana, Jeremy Todd
SP: Clayton Andrews, Brett Evert, Gustavo Martinez, Jason Norderum, Josh Stevens
RP: Eric Ackerman, Derrick DePriest, Rob Henkel, James Lira, Jason Norderum, Ross Peeples, Todd Pennington, Scott Sobkowiak, Manny Vazquez-Santiago

(Ashmore’s Updated Notes: Lancaster did nothing, but they really didn’t need to. You might see another signing or two, but I doubt it’s anything big.)

Long Island

INF: Edgardo Alfonzo (3B), Rob Cafiero (1B), Kevin Haverbusch (1B), Mark Lewis (2B), Ray Navarrete (SS/3B), Damian Rolls (1B/3B), Pete Rose, Jr. (1B/3B), Derek Wathan (SS,1B)
OF: Kevin Haverbusch, Richard Hidalgo, Jorge Piedra, Damian Rolls, Pete Rose, Jr., Derek Wathan
C: Jamie Pogue
SP: Pat Ahearne, Tim Cain, James Garcia, Randy Leek, Donovan Osborne
RP: Rob Cafiero, Tim Cain, James Garcia, Danny Graves, Ben Grezlovski, Kevin Mannix, John Riedling, Kevin Tolar, Travis Wade, Mark Watson

(Ashmore’s Updated Notes: Have more corner infielders. Anyway, the Ducks could also use another starter. Their infield looks pretty good, but they have way too many options there. They also need a second catcher. Outfield’s pretty solid as well.)

Newark

INF: Erick Almonte (3B/SS), Josh Arteaga (3B), Matt Brunson (2B), Ramon Castro (SS/3B), Javier Colina (2B), Pat Peavey (3B/1B)
OF: Joey Gomes, Jose Herrera, Marcus Nettles, Keith Reed
C: John Pachot, Jonathan Thomas, Jason Torres
SP: Aaron Ledbetter, Carlos Mirabal, Delvis Pacheco, J.J. Trujillo
RP: Edwin Almonte, Jake Brooks, Jason DiAngelo, Justin Huisman, Gary Knotts, Delvis Pacheco, Travis Phelps, R.J. Swindle, J.J. Trujillo

(Ashmore’s Updated Notes: Looks like Newark still could use a first baseman, but they’ll have some more reinforcements coming in at the hot corner coming soon, probably today. They have two solid outfielders, one question mark and one guy who probably won’t start. One of their catchers will have to go, since none of them can play other positions. Don’t be surprised to see Victor Rodriguez back, either.)

Road Warriors

INF:
OF:
C: Sandy Aracena
SP: Trevor Marcotte
RP: Benito Baez, Julio Guerrero, Cody Harkcom, Trevor Marcotte, Damien Myers

(Ashmore’s Updated Notes: Aracena is one of the better backstops in the league, although catching is a perennial weak point in the Atlantic League. Baez really should be on another team, he’s honestly too good for the Road Warriors.)

Somerset

INF: Elliott Ayala (SS), Pat Boran (SS), Danny Garcia (2B) Todd Leathers (DH/1B), Jeff Nettles (3B), Teuris Olivares (SS/2B), Josh Pressley (1B)
OF: Elliott Ayala, Pat Boran, Noah Hall, Ryan Radmanovich***
C: Travis Anderson, Michel Hernandez, Brian Peterson**
SP: Dave Elder, Tony Mounce, Phil Norton, Brian Reith, Chris Rojas, Josh Stewart, Andy Van Hekken
RP: Brian Adams, Jason Anderson, Dave Elder, Sam Marsonek, Phil Norton, Brian Reith, Jason Richardson, R.D. Spiehs, Saul Solveson

(Ashmore’s Updated Notes: Outfield is really the only concern right now for the Patriots, and that will be addressed as early as today — one player is a familiar face. On paper, this is the strongest a Somerset Patriots team has been in a long time, although I’m not sure they have a true #1 starter right now. The starting infield looks real good, but losing Jeff Nettles again to injury would be pretty devastating. Everywhere else though, there’s depth.)

York

INF: Rayner Bautista (2B), Luis Cotto (SS), Matt Dryer (3B/1B), Nate Espy (1B), Vic Gutierrez (SS), Travis Hake (2B), Darin Kinsolving (1B), Willie Matos (1B)
OF: Peter Bergeron, Matt Dryer, Travis Ezi, Darin Kinsolving, Tike Redman, Kazunori Tanaka
C: Fleming Baez, Greg Brown, Russ Cleveland, Luis Taveras
SP: Ryan Baerlocher, Matt Ford, Dave Gil, Shane Loux, David Maust, Adam Thomas
RP: Chris Cooper, Matt Ford, Wayne Franklin, Charlie Hesseltine, Matt Hirsh, David Maust, Jason Olson, Chris Steinborn

(Ashmore’s Updated Notes: The catching spots seem to be wide open, but there’s really no standout guy here at all. I like their bullpen a lot, but their rotation seems very shaky to me. They have a pretty solid infield with some depth, and they have some good outfielders as well. I’ll be curious to see whether Bergeron or Redman gets the nod in center field.)

Major Leaguers Who’ve Signed

Bridgeport: Matt Beech (PHI), Brian Boehringer (NYY/PIT/SD/SF), Steven Kent (TB), Albie Lopez (CLE/TB/ARI/ATL/KC), Mike Porzio (CWS/COL)
Camden: Chad Bentz (FLA/MON), Chris Fussell (BAL/KC), Ramon Nivar (BAL/TEX), Craig Paquette (DET/KC/NYM/OAK/STL), Angel Pena (LAD), Jamal Strong** (SEA), Kevin Walker (CHW/SD/SF), Kelly Wunsch (CHW/LA)
Lancaster: Clayton Andrews (TOR), Bo Hart (STL), Scott Sobkowiak (ATL)
Long Island: Pat Ahearne (DET), Edgardo Alfonzo (LAA/NYM/SF/TOR), Danny Graves (CIN/CLE/NYM), Richard Hidalgo (HOU/NYM/TEX), Mark Lewis (BAL/CIN/CLE/DET/PHI/SF), Donovan Osborne (CHC/NYY/STL), Jorge Piedra (COL), John Riedling (CIN/FLA), Damian Rolls (TB), Pete Rose, Jr. (CIN), Kevin Tolar (BOS/DET), Mark Watson (CIN/CLE/SEA)
Newark: Edwin Almonte (NYM), Erick Almonte** (NYY), Ramon Castro (OAK), Justin Huisman (KC), Gary Knotts (DET/FLA), Travis Phelps (MIL/TB), Keith Reed (BAL), J.J. Trujillo (SD)
Road Warriors: Benito Baez (FLA)
Somerset: Jason Anderson (CLE/NYM/NYY), Dave Elder (CLE), Danny Garcia (NYM), Michel Hernandez (NYY), Sam Marsonek (NYY), Tony Mounce (TEX), Phil Norton (CHC, CIN), Ryan Radmanovich*** (SEA), Brian Reith (CIN), Josh Stewart (CWS), Andy Van Hekken (DET)
York: Peter Bergeron (MON), Matt Ford (MIL), Wayne Franklin (HOU, MIL, SF, NY, ATL), Shane Loux (DET), Tike Redman (PIT)

(Ashmore’s Updated Notes: 50 former big leaguers are currently in the Atlantic League, not counting Erick Almonte, Ryan Radmanovich or Jamal Strong. Of those 50, 31 of them have never played in the Atlantic League before. There are still more on the way, so that’s not bad. The Ducks already have 12 of them, while Somerset has 10 and Camden and Newark both have seven.

There are six Yankees and just one Red Sox player, although that number will go up very shortly. There are seven Mets, three of them on the Ducks.)

Hey Mike,

do you know where Mike Huggins is? I know he signed with Milkwaukee to play AA but I can’t find him on any roster or any record of him on milb.com. I also can’t find anything saying he was released? Any info?

Also, any word on some of the other RW from last year? Barrows? Mecia? Nichols?

2. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - April 20, 2007

Huggins was unfortunately released by the Brewers organization. Barrows has talked to a few Can-Am League teams and is considering switching to pitcher, but I don’t know what he ultimately ended up doing. No word on the other two.
