The Atlantic City Surf Lied To You: Well aware that headline’s going to get me a lot of heat, but that’s the way it is.
All throughout the off-season, the team told anyone who would listen that Jeff Ball was their manager. And the whole time, they knew he wouldn’t be.
Ball was “promoted” today to assistant general manager, and Chris Carminucci was named the team’s new manager. But if you’ve been reading this site over the past few weeks, you’d know that.
It’s been known around baseball for WEEKS now, but the Surf kept saying there was nothing to it. All I ever wanted from team owner Mark Schuster was a return phone call telling me that Ball was the manager, then I’d consider the story a dead one. Now I know why I never got that call.
I have nothing against Carminucci, I’ve never met the guy. But I find it hard to believe that a guy who did as well as he did managing a team with a pitiful payroll and various other things working against it should be wearing a shirt and tie instead of a uniform in the dugout.
Perhaps the team thought he’d end up with the Camden or Newark gig and it would never have to come to this.
I wonder if they’ll still tell me that Jeff Ball is the manager when I call now…
Foster Released: Jason Guarente writes that former Barnstormers OF Quincy Foster has been released by the San Francisco Giants organization.
This is much of a guess as it is anything else, but I wonder if he’d consider going to either Camden or Newark. Remember, he started his AL career with the Riversharks and that Brandt, Foucault and Krenchicki were all there at that time.
If he liked it in Camden, perhaps he’d go back there. If he liked who he played for there, maybe he’ll go to Newark.
It’s also worth noting that Lancaster was the team that gave him his second chance in affiliated ball, so if he thinks that’s his best chance at a return, that might be the place for him.
Lancaster’s outfield is starting to get crowded, but you’d have to think there’d be a spot for him if he wanted to come back.
Catching Up With Clayton Andrews: I spoke to new Lancaster Barnstormers P Clayton Andrews for about fifteen minutes today for my Opening Day coverage. Sure, he wants to be the Opening Day starter this year, but how close was the former Blue Jay to getting the ball in the first Barnstormers game ever?
Check back for that story and a little sneak peek at my chat with Clayton tomorrow.
