Ask Ashmore: I figured I’d do an impromptu “Ask Ashmore” day. Want my take on the latest Atlantic League stories? My thoughts on the 2007 season? What I ate for breakfast this morning?

Put your questions in the comments section, and I’ll make sure I take some time to tackle them today.
Hake To Rake For York: Jason Guarente writes in his latest blog entry that former Lancaster INF Travis Hake will indeed be playing for the Revolution this season. And he also hints at a former big leaguer joining the Barnstormers. Stay tuned on this one…
Bears Sign Thomas: Newark has signed former Riversharks P Evan Thomas. The 32-year-old righty last pitched in the Atlantic League for Camden in 2004, quickly getting picked up after starting the season 8-1 in 13 starts. After spending 2005 in the Angels organization, he returned to independent ball last season, going 4-7 with a 6.19 ERA for St. Joe of the American Association.
While he has had previous success under the Camden trio (Brandt, Foucault, Krenchicki) he’s also posted ERA’s over six in each of the past two seasons. I’ve liked a lot of Newark’s signings so far — but ask me about this one on June 1st and I’ll have a better idea of how this one turned out. – Mike Ashmore, mashmore@patriotsbaseball.com

Mike, where did all of Rollie Fingers money go?

2. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - March 13, 2007

I believe he keeps it hidden in his mustache. Well hidden.

Why do you think the Patriots are so quiet about player sighnings? Do you think they have really only signed Nettles?

4. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - March 13, 2007

No clue why they’ve been as quiet as they have been. I’m told the team has a lot of verbal commitments, but Nettles may actually be the only player with a signed contract.

I know of three to four other guys that are returning from last year’s team besides Nettles – some I’ve written about and some I haven’t, so it isn’t like they aren’t sending contracts out and stuff like that.

I’m sure they have other players signed and I’m sure there’s a reason they’ve been abnormally quiet in announcing those signings this off-season, but it would really be all speculation on my part as to why.

Mike – technically would you be considered a Veteran if you wanted to play in the Can-am league with your Road Warriors experience? Would you consider coming to camp?

If the Can-Am League wanted to get a little free promotion and ask me to do a tryout piece, I’d at least listen…

that is, of course, if you REALLY wanted a $50 t-shirt. Last year another journalist fella was there trying to get in free as part of his story. He was kept until the 3rd or 4th round of “cuts”.
