To Keep The Sun Out Of His Eyes, Jimmy Hurst Wears His Triple Crown: Well, that sentence might be true had the league actually given him the aforementioned headwear when he earned it back in 2002, the only player in league history to do so.

“You know what man, that was amazing to me. I didn’t get anything from the Atlantic League, I didn’t get anything special from the Newark Bears,” Hurst said back in 2005.

“The fan club made me a crown and gave it to me. Not only that, we won the championship at the same time and I led the playoffs in offense. I led in average, home runs and RBI in the playoffs. Everybody sort of blew it off like it was nothing, but I knew what it was. I got rewarded for it by going to Japan though, so that’s the biggest reward.”

But yes, the outspoken Jimmy Hurst will not be coming back to the league this season, instead choosing to sign with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League.

Hurst has played for the Pride and Surf in the AL, but won his Triple Crown in 2002 while playing for the Bears.

Speaking of the Bears: Former Bears SS Jerson Perez signed with the Can-Am League’s North Shore Spirit. Perez was the Bears MVP in 2004. Perez’s Atlantic League rights, however, are property of the Camden Riversharks. His rights were assigned there last season to complete the trade for Lipso Nava. – Mike Ashmore, mashmore@mikeashmore.com
