It’s a big day for the Newark Bears…

Mira-ballin: According to the Bears, former Newark P Carlos Mirabal has signed a contract with the Houston Astros.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to join the Houston Astros organization, and I am looking forward to spring training to take advantage of the chance to earn a major league contract,” said Mirabal in a press release.

“I would like to thank all the doctors for their hard work which helped me regain the strength in my shoulder, as well as the Newark Bears for allowing me the opportunity to pitch in 2006.”

Other Bears Alumni Sign Elsewhere: P Gerry Oakes, who pitched for Newark in 2004 and posted a double-digit ERA, signed with the San Francisco Giants.

P Giancarlo Alvarado, who also pitched for Lancaster in the Atlantic League, has signed with the Seattle Mariners.

AL Rumored Players Sign Affiliated Deals: A few players rumored to be headed to the AL this season have signed with affiliated clubs.

OF Vince Faison, who spent last season in the Yankees organization, signed with Oakland.

OF Tim Raines, Jr. and 1B Todd Self both signed with Houston.

Raines was very close to coming to Somerset last season, and Self was rumored to be headed to the AL before instead signing with the American Association.

Cancelled Plans: C Robinson Cancel, the subject of VERY strong rumors that he’d return to the Patriots last season, had his contract sold to the New York Mets by the Edinburg Colts of the United League.

Cancel played for both Somerset and the Road Warriors during his stay in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
