McGriff To Return To Bluefish: I spoke to Bluefish manager Tommy John for about fifteen minutes today, and he told me that Terry McGriff will be returning to the team as a coach for the 2007 season.

John and McGriff had dinner at a fantasy camp in Florida recently, and John described McGriff as a very nice and knowledgeable guy.

The same can be said of John, who is a very personable and engaging individual. The 288 game winner said he’s contacted Brian Warren about a possible return as pitching coach, but also indicated he’d be willing to handle pitching related coaching and was looking for someone to help him out.

“I may not be very smart,” John joked, “but I know a lot about the middle of that diamond.”

John, who’s quick to admit he doesn’t know too much about his ballclub, does know that at least six to eight players from last year’s team are expected back, including a good part of the pitching staff.

Bluefish fans shouldn’t worry as both John and Baseball and Sports Associates (BASA) are already working the phones trying to get players, and John was on the phone looking for pitching just prior to our phone conversation.

One thing he’ll have to phase out is the lessons he gives in North Carolina, saying he gives nearly 50 a week, but as the season grew closer he’d have to focus more on managing.

John said he enjoyed managing the Staten Island Yankees, and we talked for a few minutes about some of the players he had who I’ve had the opportunity to cover with the Trenton Thunder as well.

It instantly became obvious why John will be a great fit for the league and the Bluefish. He’s an honest guy, but also very friendly. He joked around with me like I’d known him for a while, so I’m really looking forward to covering him and Bridgeport this season.

Winkelsas Excited About Return To Braves: I also spoke to former Patriots P Joe Winkelsas for about ten minutes today.

Joe took me through his path after being released by Somerset, and it was a path that included quite a few minor league stops and even a retirement. But he got back to the big leagues with Milwaukee last season, and now looks to compete for a big league roster spot with the Braves.

He’s optimistic about having a chance to do so since he was invited down early for Spring Training, and he feels like going back to Atlanta is like re-joining his family, crediting the Braves organization for being there in a time in his life whe he really needed it.

What Are Other Patriots Up To, You Ask: I’ve been talking to a few guys from last year’s team to get a gauge on who is and who isn’t coming back next season. Once I hear from everyone, I’ll put a piece together, but that’s something I’m working on.

For example, Andy Pratt appears to have retired and is now a scout for the Texas Rangers.

And which pitcher might just write an article for this site?

You’ll have to stay tuned to find out. – Mike Ashmore, mashmore@patriotsbaseball.com

I am very excited to hear that Griff is back! Hoping Brian Warren will return, as well.

As for our pitchers…there is only one from 2006 whom I wouldn’t welcome back with open arms….and anyone who was there at Harbor Yard the last game they played there will know exactly who I mean.

Amy!? (no names please)

That night really hurt. There was only one saving grace, and the only thing from that night that makes the hurt go away a little bit, and this is the conversation I had with one certain pitcher, who pitched his heart out that night in the later innings, who saw the look of despair on my face outside the clubhouse door (which is something I NEVER do!) and instead of me giving him words of encouragement, he gave me a great big hug and tried to comfort me with the sentiment of “we ain’t dead yet!” I hope he comes back to Bridgeport. He is the epitome of “good people” and I always enjoyed watching him pitch!

Yep Sheryl…I know who you mean and I hope that person does return to the Bluefish…that’s a good way to remember your season!
