Stormers Name New GM: LANCASTER , Pa. —The Lancaster Barnstormers have named Kevin Cummings , a minor league sports veteran of 17 years, as general manger of the defending Atlantic League champions. Cummings will begin his work on Jan. 15. He brings a wealth of minor league baseball experience to the Barnstormers, including stints as general manager of the Sarasota Red Sox and as assistant general manager of the Class AA Mobile BayBears.

“We were fortunate to have had many quality candidates to choose from given the Barnstormers’ enormous success on and off the field,” said Jon Danos, president of the Barnstormers. “Kevin’s deep experience combined with his personal qualities kept surfacing through the search process as being ideally compatible with the community and our staff.”

Most recently, Cummings spent two years as president of the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League—a top affiliate of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils. He will replace recently-departed Barnstormers general manager Joe Pinto as Lancaster prepares to host the 2007 Atlantic League All-Star game on July 11. Cummings has twice coordinated league all-star events, in the Florida State League (1992) and the Southern League (1998).

“The Barnstormers have already developed a reputation as one of the top minor league organizations in the country,” Cummings said. “I believe if we challenge ourselves to strengthen our community partnerships and make our fan environment even better, we can be the very best.”

Cummings, 41, is originally from Middletown, N.J. and graduated from Clemson University in South Carolina . He and his wife Chris have two sons, Jake (7) and Michael (1).

The Barnstormers have also named John Adams , formerly the production and promotions manager for the Trenton Thunder, Class AA affiliate of the New York Yankees and most recently assistant general manager of the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul, as the team’s assistant general manger of business development. He will join Shawn Gelnett , who has been with the club since its inception and was Pinto’s assistant general manager overseeing ticket sales and service, to form the management team.

“Kevin, John and Shawn will be working with a staff that is very talented and has worked hard in making the Barnstormers one of the top minor league teams in the country,” Danos said. “We feel we have a terrific combination of quality people who will bring new and diverse experiences and link them to the team’s past success.” – Mike Ashmore

Only time will tell if it was a good job by the Barnstormers — his previous experience with the Devils concerns me, since everyone clearly knows that the Rangers are the top organization in hockey.

(I’m clearly kidding, I’m sure he’ll do fine.)
