Patriots Hope Kane Is Able: Former big league P Kane Davis has been rumored to be heading to the Patriots for the past two months now, and it looks like all those rumors could prove to be true as early as today. Davis, who threw a simulated inning in Somerset several days ago and also worked out with the team during their most recent road trip, has also pitched for the Camden Riversharks in previous seasons.

Davis, a 31-year-old righty who has big league time with the Indians, Brewers, Rockies, and Mets had his name taped on top of a locker in Somerset a few days ago, furthering speculation that his signing was imminent. If Somerset does what they’ve been doing for most of the season and stays at 22 players, a move will need to be made if Davis is signed.

Surf Stuff; Delgado Hurt: C Steve Torrealba was spotted in the stands tonight, leading to speculation that he may return. Conversely, OF Gary Johnson was nowhere to be found, leading many to believe that he’s played his last game for the Surf.

But the big story was that word out of Atlantic City is that Dario Delgado may have suffered a broken hand during tonight’s game against Lancaster. That would be a huge loss for the Surf, who just reacquired him several days ago.

Don’t Call Him Chris: The Lancaster Barnstormers have sold the contract of P Brett Evert to the Boston Red Sox. Evert only appeared in one game for Lancaster, not factoring in the decision after allowing four runs in six innings in his only start. – Mike Ashmore

Widger News: Former A.L.er Chris Widger, who played backstop for the Camden Riversharks, was today traded to the Batlimore Orioles. Widger should be the Orioles backup catcher behind Ramon Hernandez after Javy Lopez was sent to Boston. – Scott Stanchak

“Minor League Team Pokes Fun at Britney”
Newark Bears Host Britney Spears Baby Safety Night
AP
NEWARK, N.J. (Aug. 3)

Wow! I copied this headline from my AOL homepage as it appeared today from the Associated Press. It seems that this “stupid bush league dumbass promo” from a “lower level league” as one b-fish fan called it has made a name nationally for the Bears in a positive & comical way & they are taking it all the way to the bank! Way to go John Brandt on your first year as GM for the Bears! We miss you in Camden tho’.

5. Amy - August 4, 2006

Barnstormers have activated pitcher Ross Peeples.

6. Anonymous - August 4, 2006

Kevin Haverbusch has a back injury.

Regarding Simontacchi’s recent signing with the Bluefish…

There has been nothing in the local paper about it and as is typical, the website has not been updated.

I did not hear Tuesday’s game in Lancaster, nor have I seen a box score. Did Simontacchi start Tuesday night or did he just come in for a couple innings?

I am going by what people here posted: that a new pitcher not on the roster pitched Tues vs Lancaster.

Any word on what’s happening with Luther Hackman? I just was talking to him Sunday and was not aware of any impending changes.

Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

9. BoosterBabe - August 4, 2006

Oh who cares what “people” think? For every 1 person laughing at them, there are 5 who think it’s funny. They are getting national exposure for the team and the league. Nothing wrong with that–it was in USA Today yesterday!

And frankly, Spears’ is just the “hook”–the information presented is being done in a serious way. Give it up already, b-fish fan.

10. Amy - August 4, 2006

Simontacchi pitched on tues…he came in relief..

11. Amy - August 4, 2006

Oh and Luther Hackman started I believe on Tues night.

12. SharkGirl - August 4, 2006

And like I said-THEY (the Bears)are laughing all the way to the bank! It’s the bottom line that matters. Silly & ridiculous promotions keep the fans coming back & wanting more. It fills the stadium-it sells food & merchandise. It gets people out for an inexpensive evening of fun that they can share with their families. That’s what it’s all about for the fans. And while they’re at it-they get to watch some good baseball at times, too!

ESPN radio may have been pounding the Bears yesterday, but they made this morning’s Sportscenter with no negative commentary whatsoever. It was a “just the facts” mention of the promotion.

14. Chuckerd58 - August 5, 2006

Speaking of promotions. Did anybody catch the photo in the latest Sports Illustrated of skier Bode Miller making a catch in tne outfield for the Nashua Pride. It seems to have worked as S.I.reported that the game was a sellout.

Two words: Jim Rome

16. Chuckerd58 - August 5, 2006

Bucky Jacobson was tossed from tonights Ducks-Pats game in Somerset.I believe Chris King the ducks announcer said it was from arguing ball-strike calls. Also,Jaun Gonzalez dropped a flyball in rightfield. I wonder if this newspaper story is affecting him. T he pats are wining big know 6-0.

17. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - August 5, 2006

I’m in Trenton covering the Robinson Cano rehab assignment, so I can’t really help you guys out on this one…

18. Chuckerd58 - August 5, 2006

Well,Jaun Gon. just threw a runner out at the plate,so maybe he isnt bothered, lol. Anyway, still 6-0 Pats after 6

19. Chuckerd58 - August 5, 2006

Rob Averette has been pitching great tonight for the Pats.

20. Chuckerd58 - August 5, 2006

Averette has just been pulledfrom the game with a possible blister problem.

21. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - August 5, 2006

Tell me there was at least one Averette-Navarrete matchup tonight…

-M-

22. Chuckerd58 - August 5, 2006

Yes,there was at least one matchup, but i didnt have the game on then,so i don’t know what happened,im assuming Averette had the edge since he struck out 9 in 5.2 innings. He left with torn skin under his nail. OUCH

23. Chuckerd58 - August 5, 2006

Final score was 6-3 Pats. Jaun Gon. did go deep for the Ducks,a 2 run shot to center.Mike Johnson pitched 1.1 innings for the save. Rob Cafiero pitched a scorless ninth for the Ducks.

24. Anonymous - August 5, 2006

Hey Ducks fans what happened to Tony Runion? Is he gone from the team because I heard on Atlantic League’s website that he was placed on the Inactive List but he is still on the roster on the Ducks site. Also what happened to Mike Ziegler?

25. BoosterBabe - August 5, 2006

Hey Amy, thanks for the update!

I was at tonight’s game (they lost to Camden 8-7. boo hoo!) and we went through at least 6 pitchers…maybe 7. I can tell you 6 who pitched…but now I’m thinking I may have missed one!!!!
Hodges started…in came Layfield, then a new pitcher, Norton; followed by Simontacchi, Journell and then Krines came in for the 9th. And for some reason, I’m thinking I might have missed someone between Journell and Krines. But maybe not! LOL

I figured out the pitching rotation by going back to the box scores after I posted earlier today…indeed Hackman has the #1 spot in the rotation and he did pitch Tuesday.

Thanks again, Amy!

26. AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com - August 5, 2006

The Ducks you mentioned are inactive.

27. number1surffan John - August 5, 2006

Dario getting taken out was lousy timing for the Surf without a doubt.

Melvin Rosario has been doing a fine job @ Catcher, and has been both a STRONG defensive player (Torreabla was not) and steady hitter. Unless Steve could play the field, I don’t know why the Surf would need a Fourth catcher (granted McLeod will be out for another month). They need backup Fielders.

no one said anything about Gary Johnson being off – but then again the game was off the air, apparently a problem with the Stockton College phone lines???

28. KenD - August 5, 2006

It may have gotten the Bears national attention, but the attendance was 3,182, the lowest in the league last night. Their lousy play doesn’t help, but it is too bad the Bears don’t draw more. They’re easy to get too and the park is as nice as any in the league.

29. Anonymous - August 5, 2006

too bad bears did not draw more, with brandt there they are really trying hard to put fans in the seats. also they are really playing well overall right now, they are tied for first and they seem to have a good group of guys, if it were not for brandt and his ability the bears would not be where they are i would love to see them make a serious run at the second half through the rest of the season, i think it would be great for the people of newark to have a contender. thanks any news on the bears would be appreciated.

30. Anonymous - August 5, 2006

Mike, Navarrete went 1 for 5 for the night. I believe he did not get a hit off of Avarette. Chris King made a good go of calling the Navarrete-Avarette matchups at the plate.

31. quackers - August 5, 2006

pretty sure that Mike Ziegler was let go when the Ducks signed Cory Bailey- haven’t seen Runion in uniform the last few games

32. Anonymous - August 5, 2006

Hey Atlantic League Fans! If you want more updated rosters of your fav. team and the team website is not updated go to http://www.freewebs.com/atlanticleague
I try to update the rosters faster than the team website. I don’t have players on the Inactive List on the website. I do need help with Bridgeport’s roster and some jersey #’s with some too. Don’t forget to sign the guestbook!
