Lancaster Clinches, Loses Two: By virtue of Somerset’s 5-2 win over Atlantic City, the Lancaster Barnstormers have earned their first playoff berth in just their second season.

However, news in Lancaster wasn’t all good. According to a source, OF Quincy Foster was signed by the San Francisco Giants and assigned to Double-A Connecticut of the Eastern League. It was in the EL where I first got to see him play, back when he was with the Marlins organization and playing for Portland.

Also, the team released P Oscar Henriquez.

Surf Stuff: All-Snub Team member 3B Joe Jianetti has been named to the South Division All-Star Team, no word on who he’ll be replacing.

Also, proving the road to the Atlantic League runs through Trenton (a “one percent” joke if there ever was one) the Surf have signed P Michael Brunet. Brunet last pitched with the Thunder, but when Eastern League rosters were trimmed from 24 to 23, Brunet was the odd man out. He was 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in seven games for Trenton, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.

Glavine To The Booth: According to Newsday, former Somerset Patriots INF Mike Glavine will serve as an analyst for SNY’s broadcasts of Brooklyn Cyclones games.

Fish Cut Bait: P Eduardo Villacis was released by the team after a few poor outings. Wouldn’t be surprised if Somerset gave him a look, but strictly as a reliever. Either that or you could move Andy Van Hekken into the bullpen, but I think a lot of that exceptionally theoretical scenario would have to do with how he fares in his Saturday start.

Also, ex-Bluefish P Hector Mercado was cut by the Tigers organization, paving the way for a possible return to Bridgeport.

Bears Deactivate Matos Again: The Bears have again placed P Josue Matos on the inactive list, retroactive to June 30th. In other Bears news, well-traveled former Bear P Jake Brooks has signed with Calgary of the Northern League.

Lima Designated For Assignment: After getting rocked in a game I was thinking about paying to go see, former Bears P Jose Lima was designated for assignment by the Mets after allowing seven runs in tonight’s game against the Marlins. Opposing pitcher Dontrelle Willis hit a grand slam in the game, the first grand slam by a pitcher since ex-Bluefish P Robert Person’s in 2002.

Did you know that Lima never faced Somerset? He was with the team when the Bears came to Bridgewater, but he didn’t face the Patriots either at home or on the road. – Mike Ashmore

Yes, somehow Joe Jiannetti go “un” shafted if you will. That brings AC up to 8 representatives @ the All Star game. Odd that the entire infield (all 5, yes 5 of them) is there, but a consistent stand up player like Gary Johnson (CF) was excluded……

Maybe they can get 9 – last night F. Lunar of Somerset left after his 1st and only at bat, apparently tore a quad on the way to first…..
