Winkelsas Called Up: Joe Winkelsas was with the Somerset Patriots in 2004. He only lasted seven games before getting released. Now, he finds himself in the big leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers. That’s right, the Brewers have called up the pitcher to the show, his first trip there since one game against the Mets in 1999.

Joe was always a very friendly guy, but this is something I never would have expected based on how he looked in Somerset. Regardless, good for him. I believe that makes him the seventh Somerset Patriot to reach the Major Leagues following a stint in Bridgewater.

UPDATE – Winkelsas made his return to the show official tonight, getting into the game against the Reds in the fifth inning. He faced two batters, walking Jason LaRue to load the bases in relief of Dana Eveland and inducing an inning ending groundout to former Red Sox legend Scott Hatteberg.

By virtue of getting that out in his first big league game in over seven years, Winkelsas lowers his career MLB ERA from 54.00 to 27.00

New SALARY CAP Article Posted: Just wanted to encourage everyone to check out my new article, which you can do by clicking here. I stuck with my gut and followed the salary cap story, and although it wasn’t necessarily the bombshell I was hoping it might be, I think you can all learn more about the league and some of the behind the scenes aspects of it by checking this out. You don’t see too many articles like this getting published, and I put a lot of work into it, so I hope everyone enjoys it.

Interesting Item For Ducks Fans: For those of you who like Erick Almonte, you might want to check out this eBay item for a unique collectible of the former Yankees shortstop. For those of you hoping for a feature on him…well, stay tuned. There might be some big news regarding that coming up shortly. – Mike Ashmore

It’s tough doing eBay searches for Atlantic League stuff as the South Atlantic League items glut the market. I’ve found a few gems from AC Surf casino chips and the nostalgic Negro League jerseys, but mostly cards which are cheaper on http://www.homeruncards.com (of course after making sure they aren’t already listed on the AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com cards offered).

Have better luck searching eBay with individual team names; Newark Bears, Bridgeport Bluefish, etc.

true. With Atlantic City Surf I also find a bunch of postcards and stuff not baseball related, but at least I don’t have to dig through the glut of South stuff….

I also have had some success with individual player names – but some even then are difficult. Too many baseball Gary Johnson’s for example

Why is there a picture of Mike Ashmore on this page? I thought the story was about Joe Winkelsas.

Hey bluefish fan – since it seems like it’s me, you, Mike, and Scott – how about coming into our neck of the woods? Bridgeport is in town this weekend – I plan to attend the Fri and Sun games – be my pleasure to “host” you around if you can. They come back to AC end of June/Early July and again in mid August.
