Bears Bring Back Maxwell: The Newark Bears are going to bring back first baseman Keith Maxwell for his third stint in white and purple. Maxwell is a huge power threat and great re-addition to Chris Jones’ lineup. – Scott Stanchak.

Big News in Newark: I’ve been able to confirm that the Bears are bringing in three new players with big league time, and they’ll be doing so likely within the week.

Also, be on the lookout for another returning favorite to sign within the next 48 hours.

I’m really excited about this one signing…a pitcher I’d been hearing about for a week or two.

Really, really impressed with the Bears off-season so far. I’ll be really curious to see how the teams who aren’t among the four essentially sharing player procurement resources will do compared to the ones that are. Newark isn’t in the group of four teams, so it looks like their guys are really working overtime to get stuff done.

Patriots Sign Two: The Somerset Patriots have re-signed P Nick Bierbrodt and signed P Mike Johnson. Bierbrodt went to camp with the Los Angeles Dodgers this year, but was released prior to the start of the season. Johnson has appeared in 81 big league games for the Baltimore Orioles and Montreal Expos from 1997 to 2001.

Ducks Sign Three: The Ducks have signed big league pitchers Andrew Lorraine and Ryan Jensen. They also signed P Pete Hartmann, who was last with the club in 2002 and most recently pitched in the GBL.

Lorraine has pitched for the Angels, White Sox, Athletics, Mariners, Cubs, Indians and Brewers. And he’s done that all while pitching just 59 big league games.

Jensen pitched for the Giants from 2001-2003 and for the Royals in 2005. He’s a big right-handed starter that should give a boost to the Ducks rotation.

‘Stormers Officially Sign Two: Lancaster has officially announced they’ve signed 1B Alex Hernandez and INF Jose Ortiz. I never got the chance to interview Hernandez when he was here in 2003 or Ortiz last season, so this will be a nice second chance for me. It’ll also be a nice second chance for Ortiz, who was just days away from being picked up before an injury ended his season.

AL Alums: The Pensacola Pelicans of the American Association signed former Bluefish OF Rolo Avila today. Rolo was always one of the better players in the Atlantic League, and one of the most friendly faces in the clubhouse as well. He was one of those guys I thought you could count on seeing in a Bluefish uniform year in and year out.

Former Atlantic League player P Eric Montoya was traded to Fullerton of the GBL by his American Association team. Former Surf INF Jose Velazquez, suspended 10 days last year as part of the league’s substance abuse policy, was released by the Northern League’s Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. – Mike Ashmore
