Comings & Goings: The San Diego Padres released former Newark Bear Pete Maestrales, who was promptly picked up by the Baltimore Orioles. The Boston Red Sox released Jimmy Hurst, while the New York Mets did the same to Felix Villegas.

Thanks to one of our readers for some help with this one…

Bluefish News: According to the Connecticut Post, the Bridgeport Bluefish have reached agreements with several players, including 1B/DH Angel Echevarria, who played in the majors with the Colorado Rockies, Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs.

The club also has 2B Steve Hine, OF Gary Burnham, P Sean Fesh, OF Bobby Darula, P Scott Layfield and SS Angel Espada. (Sorry if I’m repeating names we’ve already posted in the past.)

The paper also reports that Eddy Ramos “will likely be back this season as the Bluefish closer and Tim Cain will return as one of the starters.”

The club is also working on deals with former major-leaguers Brian Boehringer, Donovan Osborne, and Will Cunnane. I’ve been saying that Boehringer should have come to this league since last year, an idea I told to Patriots officials.

Ducks Sign MLB Vet: The Long Island Ducks signed pitcher Nelson Figueroa, appeared in 74 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Also, apparently, first baseman Bucky Jacobson was working on a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, but things couldn’t be worked out so he’ll still be joining the Ducks down in Lakeland, Fl. – Scott Stanchak.

Ashmore’s Take: I, of course, like the Figueroa signing. Of his 74 big league games, 33 of them were starts, so it looks like the Ducks are getting a versatile righty. Another interesting fact is that Figueroa is a career .179 hitter in the big leagues with 5 RBI. Not bad at all for a pitcher. – MA

Patriots Sign Two Big-Leaguers: The Patriots added two former major-league arms to their staff today, agreeing to terms with Hector Almonte and Andy Van Hekken.

Almonte has 50 games of Major League experience with the Florida Marlins,
Boston Red Sox, and Montreal Expos.

Van Hekken has Major League experience with the Detroit Tigers, where in five games, he compiled a 3.00 ERA.

Former MVP Returns To The Barn: The Lancaster Barnstormers re-signed outfielder Quincy Foster, which is huge for this team’s speed on the basepaths and defense in the outfield. He, perhaps, was just under par of Somerset’s Jeremy Owens and what he did in center last year.

Speaking of Somerset, the team announced the signing of Cam Smith, which I told you about a few weeks ago. The club also signed former Patriots backstop Manny Santana. I always liked Santana, he was still very raw at the time, but has a lot of potential. – SS.

Barnstormers Roster Nearing Completion: Barnstormers officials are having an excellent off-season, as they’ve now signed former big leaguers Reggie Taylor and Alex Hernandez according to the Lancaster New Era. Taylor was a first round pick of the Phillies in 1995 and is a 29 year old outfielder who got time in the big leagues just last year with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He’s also played for the Phillies, Tigers and Reds.

Hernandez was on the 2003 Patriots Championship team and the first baseman played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2000 and 2001. – MA
