Patriots Sign Two: The Somerset Patriots signed two players out of their tryout camp today, the first players the team has signed from tryouts since Bryan Malko and Paul Ottavinia in 2004. But the biggest news was that the team signed former University of Miami standout Jim Burt, Jr. and invited him to Spring Training.

“That’s the great thing about this league, is that if you do well, it puts you on the map again. That’s what I want, just an opportunity to play in a great league like this and see what I’ve got,” Burt said.

The team also invited C Ryan McDermond to Spring Training as well.

Trade In The Works: The Patriots are rumored to have sent one of their pitchers from the 2005 team to Camden in exchange for a position player. More on this as it develops.

Bears News: Jerson Perez will be out for the season with a torn achillies. Also, the team is reportedly talking to another former big league player, this time a pitcher. If they’re able to get this guy, a 12-game winner just a few years ago in the big leagues, it would be a huge boost to their staff. – Mike Ashmore

A.C. Tryouts Downlow: The tryouts at The Sandcastle in Atlantic City drew between 125-150 participants. Unsigned Surf pitcher Lincoln Mikkelsen was present with a clipboard. The Surf have a pitching coach so it will be interesting to see if he returns as a player or in what capacity.

New Road Warriors coach Ryan Minor was present, as well. I called Minor a few days ago and will call him again this week if I don’t hear back from him.

Several other names were present, including new Camden Riversharks coach Brad Strauss and Surf manager Jeff Ball.

Rain ended the tryout early and I can’t confirm any signings; however, it looks as if some of the players will end up with the Road Warriors, who’s roster is still up in the air.

As for some players who shape the roster for the Surf, some of which we’ve told you about already: Alexis Llanos, a former Somerset Patriot, Bridgeport Bluefish, Surf and Riversharks infielder; 2B David Housel, 3B Raul Marval, 1B Joe Jianetti, a player that the Surf are expecting big numbers in the short time he’s expected to be in uniform; LF Al Benjamin, CF “Meatball” Heath, RF/DH Ozzie Timmons. Pitchers include Ryan Schurman, Mark Persails, Rob Corrado, and Mikkelsen. – Scott Stanchak.
