Bucky’s a Duck: When I saw the title of the press release, I thought perhaps the Ducks organization had anticipated the inevitable voting off of American Idol contestant Bucky Covington and signed him to a contract. Suffice it to say, that didn’t happen.

In somewhat of a surprising signing, the Ducks have agreed to terms with former Mariners 1B/DH Bucky Jacobsen. This is a name I know. Jacobsen was immensly popular with Mariners fans, even earning his own fan club which can be found by clicking here.

Jacobsen played in 42 games for the 2004 Mariners, hitting .275 with nine home runs. This guy is a real fan favorite and an absolutely great signing for the Ducks. If he can show some of the ridiculous power he showed at the higher levels of the minors, he’s a prime candidate to be the first one to get picked up this season. Bucky was in White Sox camp this season, returning from knee surgery. There was talk that he might play in Japan if he didn’t stick with the White Sox, but that’s clearly not the case…not yet, anyway.

Cool signing, I like it.

Lima Time in Newark?: The New York Mets assigned former Newark Bears P Jose Lima to their minor league camp today. I’d have a hard time believing he accepts that assignment, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him return to the Atlantic League at some point. Lima has always spoken very positively about his time in the league (the anti-Joe Borowski, if you will) and if he had to come back, I think he would. – Mike Ashmore
