Ducks Sign Three: The Long Island Ducks signed three more players today, including two from last year’s Nashua Pride team. I’d assume that those two players were “drafted” in the expansion draft that was held this off-season. For those of you wondering why I keep putting that stuff in quotes, I’ll just come right out and say I don’t think there was any draft.

Anyway, the Ducks signed INF Kevin Haverbusch, P Jason Blanton and C Greg Connors.

This will be Haverbusch’s third season in the Atlantic League, and he’s coming off a successful campaign that saw him hit 19 home runs a year ago for Nashua.

Blanton also pitched for the Pride last season and will be entering his fifth season of professional baseball.

Connors is probably the most intriguing out of the three signings, as he’s been out of the game for the past two seasons. He was signed by the Mariners as an undrafted free agent in 1996, and spent seven seasons in the organization. He advanced as high as Triple-A, where he spent most of the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

He’s a career .265 hitter in 2,593 at-bats. The 31 year-old has collected 76 career HR and 420 RBI. His walk to strikeout ratio is roughly 1 : 2.5, seems like a pretty solid catcher from an offensive standpoint.

Hill Waived: The San Diego Padres have waived former Newark Bears INF Bobby Hill. Hill has played for both the Cubs and Pirates during his brief big league career. – Mike Ashmore
