Surf Leased: It was done in 2002 and 2003, and it’s being done again. According to The Press of Atlantic City, Frank Boulton has leased the team to Mark Schuster, who also owns several others independent teams.

Probably the only other newsworthy item to come out of this, other than the fact that they’re doing away with Centerplate as their concessionaire, is that Mike Veeck has been brought in as a consultant.

Veeck is the son of Hall of Famer Bill Veeck, perhaps best known for his wacky promotions such as disco night. Some of the more, ahem…seasoned baseball fans might recall this being an absolute disaster, as fans started storming the field and throwing their old records around and even lighting them on fire.

Not to be outdone, the younger Veeck has given away a funeral at a game and invited such luminaries as Tonya Harding to be part of pre-game festivities.

Dewey to Mariners: Jason Dewey, who caught Joe Gannon’s no-hitter for the Bears in 2004, had his contract purchased by the Seattle Mariners this off-season. Dewey was able to parlay a successful season in the GBL last year into a deal in affiliated ball this year. Good for him. – Mike Ashmore
