Patriots News: Ryan Dunleavy of The Courier-News reports that 2005 Patriots center fielder Jeremy Owens has signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. That makes Owens the latest in a rather long line of former Patriots to sign with the Devil Rays organization after playing for Somerset; including Cam Smith, Mitch Meluskey, Robinson Cancel, Matt Carnes and Alex Hernandez among others.

According to Dunleavy, the deal is structured so that Owens will land anywhere from Double-A to the big leagues. Having watched J.O. for a full season, I feel as though he has big league potential, but has to work on pitch selection to cut down on his strikeouts a little bit.

Also, as we reported last month, Ryan Radmanovich and Kevin Nicholson have been named to the Canada squad that will take on the world at the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

“It’s a little different feeling this time,” Radmanovich told the paper. “The reason is that Barry Bonds and guys like that weren’t on the other side (in the Olympics).

According to the Baseball Canada website, those two will be joined by 14 current Major League players, including Pirates slugger Jason Bay. The complete roster can be viewed via this PDF file.

The Patriots have also moved their spring training site to Lakeland, Florida this season…I’d assume the league has done this as well, although Atlantic City and Camden are probably locks to remain up north.

Atlantic League spring training had been held in Homestead, Florida for the past several years. However, field conditions had deteriorated to the point where they could best be described as “God-awful” and several players reported having to fight off wildlife in their accomodations.

(Note: An attempt earlier this month to reach the Patriots front office regarding player and coach movement was unsuccessful.) – Mike Ashmore
