News and Notes: The Bergen Cliff Hawks remain in limbo as officials continue to negotiate the cost of the yearly “rent” for use of the stadium. With figures ranging anywhere from $750,000 to $1.5 million, both sides appear to be far apart, but numerous news outlets have reported that they have agreed to meet again before Christmas.

Steve Kalafer, perhaps one of the most generous and kindest people you’ll ever meet and also owner of the Somerset Patriots and Newark Bears, has been trying for years to get a team into Bergen County, and the stadium would be a key part of the Xanadu project which is currently under construction at The Meadowlands.

The best way I can describe my feelings on this is as follows…the sooner the Cliff Hawks come to fruition, the sooner the Road Warriors go away (again). The league had gone the way of Neil Armstrong last season, taking one small step forward…but then taking one giant leap backwards this season in having a road team again. It makes the other seven teams more competitive, but kills the league as a whole.

In other news, The Camden Courier-Post reports that Riversharks broadcaster Landon Sears will not be back with the team next season. Sears, the teenage radio voice of the South Jersey franchise for just one season, was called upon to broadcast the All-Star Game for the league in 2005, a move which mystified many media types around the league. In any event, Sears has reportedly been offered several radio jobs in minor league baseball. – Mike Ashmore
