Patriots News: The loveable Geoff Mosher of The Courier News reports that the team is close to an agreement with RHP Jon McDonald. McDonald would vill the void left by Robert Marquez, who injured his hamstring in a game several days ago. McDonald has spent the past three seasons with the Kansas City T-Bones of the independent Northern League. The former Florida State Seminoles standout spent four seasons in the Twins organization, advancing as high as Double-A there.

Mosher also reports that INF Ray Navarrete may be facing a suspension due to bumping an umpire. If the umpire did, in fact, call Navarrete a “bench warmer” then he should be the one facing discipline from the league, not Navarrete.

The umpiring has been as bad as it’s been since I (MA) started covering the league in 2003. A lot of these guys would be out of place at your kid’s little league game.

Also, Mosher (who must have numb fingers from all the reporting he’s been doing lately) reports that P Greg Modica has returned to the team after an unsuccessful stint in Taiwan.

Mosher writes: His time in Taiwan lasted less than four days. When he arrived, the job for which he thought they would pay him about $8,500 per month wound up being an open competition with another pitcher, one with major-league experience.

He threw a bullpen session his first day, then a three-inning simulated game the next — “I wasn’t very happy with that,” he said — before team officials informed him that night at his hotel room that he wasn’t their choice.

But Modica also told the paper, “It was worth going out there and giving it a shot.”

Updates: News updates might be few and far between for the next few days, as I’ll be heading down to Washington, D.C. to see two Washington Nationals games. I leave Tuesday night and return just in time for some Patriots baseball on Friday. I’ll be getting to see my favorite pitcher, Dontrelle Willis, plus get to see two really important games in regards to the playoff race as well.
