Update on Elder: I recently talked to former Somerset Patriots pitcher Dave Elder. A quick glance at his stats shows that he’s doing the same thing to PCL hitters that he did those in the Atlantic League…dominate them. Elder has thrown twelve and two thirds scoreless innings for the Triple-A Omaha Royals over the span of eight games, posting a 2-0 record along with 12 strikeouts.

With numbers like that and with Omaha’s parent club, Kansas City, languished in MLB’s cellar with a 42-86 record, a September call-up certainly doesn’t seem to be out of the question. But for Elder, it doesn’t even cross his mind.

“I can’t worry about it, can’t think about it,” said the former Cleveland Indian. “I haven’t heard anything. I came over here with no expectations and I don’t expect anything. All I can do is go out and pitch.”

When asked about if he was trying to make an impression on team officials for a look next season, Elder responded with similar comments.

“I haven’t really thought about next year because I’m afraid that will take my focus off of what we’re trying to accomplish this year.”

And what they’re trying to accomplish is catching the first place Nashville Sounds, who are three games up on the Royals with 8 to play. The Sounds are home of four former Atlantic League players, with former Camden Rivershark Kane Davis having just been called up from there by Milwaukee a few weeks ago.

Whether Elder would return to the Patriots after Omaha’s season remains undetermined, but if he keeps pitching like he’s pitching, he might be back in the big leagues instead of back in the Atlantic League. And the big leagues are where Elder truly belongs.
