Patriots Make Moves: The Somerset Patriots released pitcher Gene Stechschulte today after only four appearences. It seems that he wasn’t quite ready to throw again and the scenario was very similar to that of last season’s stint, where he again left after four games.

The team signed infielder Lou Lucca to take his place on the roster — they also inserted him into the starting lineup for Monday’s game. Lucca had been rumored to be coming to Somerset for many years now and today was the day it all happened.

The team also released pitcher Justin Wayne, who signed last week, but didn’t appear in a game. Wayne has big-league time with the Florida Marlins and was a former first-round pick. He was spotted speaking with Lancaster Barnstormers pitching coach Rick Wise for about 10-15 minutes prior to today’s game.

After the game tonight I was told that the team released Wayne because he wasn’t ready to throw. Pitching coach John Montefusco said they were hoping he’d go home and fully recover and come back in the spring, however, Wayne feels he can throw and will most likely end up in Lancaster.

He also said that Stechschulte was still in a pain and needed to shut it down. – Scott Stanchak.

Mike’s Note: Although team officials wouldn’t confirm anything, I’d be absolutely shocked if Scott Forster wasn’t on the Patriots roster in 48 hours. It was confirmed tonight that Forster will join the team and be activated before tomorrow’s game for the Patriots. — S.S.

Transactions: The Bears have placed P Willie Banks on the inactive list. Willie couldn’t have been any nicer of a guy, but you’ve got to wonder how much left he’s got in the tank. Interviewing some of these guys make it a lot harder to criticize them when they’re not doing well, so you just have to let the numbers speak for themselves. Banks allowed 15 earned runs in two innings over four appearances. That puts him with a 67.50 ERA to go with opponents hitting .682 off of him. As I said, couldn’t have been a nicer guy, and I’m very glad I got to interview him and see him pitch. Hopefully he can come back later in the year and pitch like he has in the past, but we shall see.

Also, the Barnstormers have released P Jimmy Jackson. Jackson allowed five earned runs in an inning during his only appearance.

10Q Update: I talked to P Joe Dawley today, so hopefully all the Barnstormers fans who ride me for not talking to their guys will give me a bit of a break. In any event, Dawley pitched for the Braves in 2002 and 2003 and was just in the big leagues last year with the Indians. – Mike Ashmore.
