Crawford Retires: Sad news out of Long Island today, as one of my favorite people in the league has retired. P Paxton Crawford announced his retirement today, after seeing his record fall to 8-8 after a solid start. I’d followed Crawford’s career ever since he put on a Trenton Thunder uniform in 1999, so this is pretty sad to see. Pax deserved another shot in the big leagues, he’s a lot more talented than his numbers would indicate. I wish him the best in whatever he does.

I’m very glad and feel very fortunate that I was able to interview Crawford. I could walk away from this job right now with no regrets about missing out on an interview (and that’s still an everyday battle for me) but that would not have been the case had I missed out on interviewing Pax.

This is a big blow to the Ducks pitching staff, but help is on the way. I’ve heard talk of the team bringing in some more pitching, including one guy who’s been with the team before. We’ll see how that unfolds.

Saying that they’re going after guys with big league time is like saying the sky is blue, so I won’t really look too prophetic until they actually pick someone up.

Lunar Eclipse?: Geoff Mosher of The Courier News reports that the team is bringing in a catcher in pitcher to try and revive the struggling squad. Mosher reports that the team has had “open lines of communication” with C Fernando Lunar and P Josue Matos. Mosher also reports that P Gene Stechschulte, who was with the team in 2004, will return in 2005 and be in uniform on Tuesday.

Lunar played in the big leagues from 2000-2002 with the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles.

Matos has experience in the Mariners and Blue Jays minor league systems.

Stechschulte played in the big leagues from 2000-2002 with the St. Louis Cardinals and pitched in two NLDS playoff games in 2001 for the team. Stechschulte is probably best known for hitting a home run in his first at-bat.

Bluefish News: The Connecticut Post reports that the team is bringing back INF Jose Amado. Also OF Rolo Avila is set to have surgery to repair his torn PCL.

Bichette Not Likely to Return: The latest I’ve heard about the ongoing Dante Bichette saga is that he’s not expected to return to the Atlantic League this season. A source close to the situation says, however, that doesn’t mean Bichette wouldn’t head to another independent league, most likely the Can-Am League.

Affiliation Update: It’s now posted. See why it’s one of the most popular features on the site today.

AL Scoreboard: There isn’t one today, all eight teams are off. – Mike Ashmore
