Playoff Pride: With their 5-0 eight hit shutout of the Lancaster Barnstormers, the Nashua Pride have clinched the first half title and will be in the playoffs come late September. Congratulations to everyone involved there.

AL Scoreboard: Newark beat Long Island, 4-2, behind the arm of former White Sox and Red Sox hurler Carlos Castillo. Castillo’s complete game six hitter shut down the Ducks, as the Bears took 3 of 4 from the struggling Long Island squad. Paxton Crawford fell to 8-5 in the loss, largely in part to Keith Maxwell’s 7th home run of the year. If Maxwell can get going and Castillo can keep pitching this way, the Bears have a genuine shot at the second half title.

The Somerset Patriots beat the Atlantic City Surf, 6-2, in front of an impressive crowd of 6,125. Scott Sobkowiak went eight innings to pick up the win, allowing both runs while striking out five.

The Camden Riversharks beat the Bridgeport Bluefish, also by a score of 6-2. Dwight Maness was the difference for Camden, with his grand slam lifting the team to victory. That was Maness’ 9th home run of the year.

Maness isn’t really known as a power guy, but that was his 63rd home run as a member of the Riversharks over the past five seasons, including a career high 18 in 2003. I think he’s a better player than people give him credit for, including myself sometimes.

Brett Laxton benefitted from Camden’s four run fifth inning, picking up the win with eight strong innings. He improved to 4-2 on the year. Brad Strauss also went 4-5 in the win.

10Q Update: My interviews with both Bobby M. Jones and Carlos Castillo are now both posted. Let me know what you think. – Mike Ashmore
