Gone: The Somerset Patriots lost pitcher Derek Lee to the Texas Rangers organization today. He will report to Triple-A and the team has not signed anyone to replace him. – Scott Stanchak.

Camden signing: OF Jason Fitzgerald agreed to terms with Camden. He was picked in the first round with the 41st overall pick in the 1997 draft by the Cleveland Indians. He spent six seasons in the Indians organization, advancing as high as Triple-A. He then spent 2003 with the Braves organization before spending 2004 in the Northern League. He brings a career .259 batting average with him to Camden.

Scoreboard: In a game that both Scott and myself attended, the Somerset Patriots beat the Newark Bears, 6-3. The Bears made things interesting late and had the bases loaded with two outs, but couldn’t get the job done against Robert Marquez, who got the only batter faced out for the save.

I’ll go more into detail about my experience in Newark later, but I will quickly say that their stadium was a pleasant surprise compared to my expectations.

The Surf got another complete game shutout out of one of their starters, this time from Jason Stocksill, as he outpitched Donovan Osborne and the Ducks for a 3-0 victory. Only one of the runs Atlantic City scored was earned, which can only lower the ERA of hard luck loser Osborne, but will also make his chances of getting out of here much, much higher.

Camden beat Lancaster, 7-6, in 11 innings. Dwight Maness, who’s almost begging me to use a corny headline like “Don’t mess with Maness” in my next update, went 4-6 with 5 RBI tonight…including hitting the game winning single.

Nashua beat Bridgeport, 5-4. Nate Teut picked up the win for Nashua, who moved into sole possession of first with the win. D.J. Boston hit a three run home run against his former mates, but it wasn’t enough. Jim Mann got the save for the Pride, his 10th of the year.

Free Marketing Idea o’ the day for Nashua: Get the Batman theme music, record “Jim Mann” over “Batman” and you’ve got yourself one hell of a catchy intro song. Eric Gagne can come out to Hell’s Bells all he wants, I’d take the “Jim Mann” song any day. Not a diss at all to Mann, he was a blast to interview…very cool guy.

Assorted News and Notes: Bridgeport signed P Brian Warren after about a month of speculation. They placed P Phil Rosengren on the DL with a case of “having a 5.48 ERA-itis.” The Ducks placed Edwin Diaz on the inactive list and the Barnstormers placed P Ross “Ordinary” Peeples on the DL. – Mike Ashmore
