BREAKING NEWS: P Jered Weaver, brother of MLB pitcher Jeff Weaver and a client of super agent Scott Boras, has agreed to terms with the Camden Riversharks. Weaver, who was drafted 12th overall by the Anaheim Angels in the most recent draft, will join INF Stephen Drew, who was picked 15th overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in that draft.

Both players opted not to sign with their respective teams and unless they are signed by the June deadline, will be eligible to be re-drafted by any other MLB team.

Both players are also Boras clients and both were the only players not to sign out of the 2004 first round draft class, except Orioles draft pick Wade Townsend, who tried to go back to school but wasn’t allowed to do so.

Sound familiar? This is exactly what happened a few years back when Bobby Hill signed with the Newark Bears. He was drafted by the Cubs in the second round of the 2000 draft and the two sides couldn’t agree to terms. Hill eventually did sign with the Cubs, but spent his 2000 campaign in Newark.

Oh yeah…his agent? Scott Boras.

According to a Los Angeles Times article, the team has essentially given up hope that they can sign Weaver by the May 30th deadline.

“It doesn’t look like it is going to get done,” Angels GM Bill Stoneman told the paper. “If it doesn’t happen, then it doesn’t happen.”

Weaver was reportedly offered a five year Major League deal for approximately $5 million or a minor league deal with a $4 million dollar signing bonus.

Here, he’ll make a maximum of $3,000 a month. Enjoy.

The Riversharks will be in Somerset for a three game series starting today, Friday. Good seats still remain, check out the future of Major League Baseball today.

Scoreboard: The Patriots defeated the Riversharks, 2-1. Ryan Kellner hit a home run for Somerset in front of almost 7,000 fans. The Bluefish beat the Surf, 10-9, in 11 innings. Oreste Marrero’s walkoff home run led the Barnstormers over the Bears, 8-7. The Ducks beat Nashua, 5-3.

Signings: Connecticut Post beat writer Rich Elliott reports that the Bluefish expect P Tim Cain to be activated in then near future, he re-joined the team during the road trip in Somerset.

Also, the Long Island Ducks have signed INF Jimmy Goelz. Goelz was a former Marlins farmhand, and was with the team in spring training this year.

The team deactivated INF Kevin Baez, making him a full-time coach and apparently making him officially retired as well. If anyone feels the need to clear this one up, you know how to contact me…
