According to a source: “The best way to describe Hector Mercado‘s two short appearances in Nashua is Impressive. Mercado is equally impressed with the quality of play in the Atlantic league which he hadn’t known much about. The Lefty Latino Trio of Mercado, Arroyo and Miranda all of Puerto Rico give Chico Lind some healthy arms coming off good winter ball outings. As a side note Mercado had been in Japan in 2004 with Fukuoka and his manager was the Legendary Home Run King Sadaharu Oh. Atlantic League autograph collectors should get Mercado’s fast because he’ll be back in the bigs if he stays healthy.”

Player Signing: The Pride have signed 1B/DH Brian Becker. Becker was in Triple-A with the Charlotte Knights before heading north. He has spent his entire minor league career with the White Sox organization. In two seasons of A ball in 2003 and 2004, he hit a combined 41 home runs.

Scoreboard: Patriots at Ducks PPD Rain (rescheduled for 5/9), Rivversharks 4 at Bears 3, Barnstormers 7 at Bluefish 1, Surf 9 at Pride 2.

Story Update: To update a story we reported yesterday, Riversharks INF Stephen Drew has not played in the last four games, furthering speculation of an injury. Since nobody covers Camden on a full-time basis and nobody’s returned my call, that’s all I can give you for now…

Ashmore’s Take: In the latest edition of Mickey’s Mail, which is always fun to read and can be subscribed to via bridgeportbluefish.com, Mickey is just as surprised as I am that the first place Bluefish are hosting the first place Barnstormers. One might last, as Bridgeport has been getting stellar outings from pretty much every pitcher other than the one I was expecting. However, how long will it be before Lancaster starts playing like an expansion team? This will be a fun story to follow throughout the season.

Rumor Mill: There’s also a rumor that the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League want to get into the Atlantic League. – Scott Stanchak w/Mike Ashmore.
