Spring training is officially underway. Stay tuned for the latest in roster cuts and more on your number one Atlantic League web site, AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com…

With very little fanfare, the Long Island Ducks and Pete Rose, Jr., who once agreed to terms with the Somerset Patriots, have reached an agreement on a contract. This was reported weeks ago on our site. Rose, who briefly played with the Cincinnati Reds in 1997, joins a crowded Ducks OF. Rose was once traded for former Newark Bears standout Joe Borowski…

The Lancaster Barnstormers picked up a win in their first-ever game, beating the Ducks, 5-2. Rose Jr. had a run-scoring double and John Rocker struck out two and allowed a run in one-inning pitched. Prior to the game today, the Ducks announced the signings of Edgar Tovar, catcher Joe DePastino, outfielder Chris Latham and pitchers Rodney Myers and Brian Bowles…

Everyone the Ducks signed except for Tovar brings MLB experience to the league. Here’s the breakdown:

Brian Bowles – 2001-03 Toronto Blue Jays
Joe DePastino – 2003 New York Mets
Chris Latham – 1997-99 Minnesota Twins, 2001 Toronto Blue Jays, 2003 New York Yankees
Rodney Myers – 1996-99 Chicago Cubs, 2000-02 San Diego Padres, 2003-04 Los Angeles Dodgers
Pete Rose, Jr. – 1997 Cincinnati Reds

Tovar is another one of those under the radar signings that I really like. He’s a good leader and is a great bat to have off the bench. He starts on most teams…

I’m familiar with DePastino from my days of watching the Eastern League. Joe is a catcher who played with the Trenton Thunder and Binghamton Mets and I think he’ll be a nice fit for Long Island.
